We believe that prevention is better than treatment. Savings in both dollars and discomfort can be gained by preventing cavities and gum disease, rather than allowing decay and the need for restoration. Key ingredients in the prevention of tooth decay are twice daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, diligent flossing, eating well, limiting sugar intake, and most important, seeing your dentist 2-4 times a year as recommended.
FLUORIDE TREATMENTS
Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens teeth and protects them from decay. During childhood, fluoride works by making tooth enamel more resistant to the acid that causes tooth decay. For teens and adults the benefits are just as great. Fluoride helps repair the early stages of tooth decay even before they become visible in the mouth. While insurance generally covers fluoride on children, they usually do not cover this treatment for adults. We recommend that all our patients have this treatment at their regular prophylaxis appointment.
SEALANTS
A plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, which bonds into the depressions and grooves of these surfaces. They act as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids. They can also stop small areas of decay from becoming larger. Although usually applied to children, it is becoming more common to apply them to adults teeth.
